Yukon Liquor Corporation to eliminate single-use bags
WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Liquor Corporation will stop offering single-use bags with purchases, Minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation Jim Kenyon announced today. The change will coincide with Earth Week 2010.
“The Yukon Liquor Corporation is encouraging customers to help reduce waste when they shop at Yukon liquor stores,” Kenyon said. “We are proud to be among the first jurisdictions in Canada to adopt this policy.” Effective April 19, liquor store customers will have the option to bring their own bag, purchase a reusable bag, use a liquor carton, or not use a bag. There is no legal requirement to have liquor in a bag when it is taken out of a liquor store.
“Yukoners understand the importance of our environment,” Kenyon said. “We estimate this change will eliminate up to 12 metric tons from the waste stream per year.” Reusable bags have been available since last October and sell for $1. They are designed specifically for liquor products in 4-bottle, 6-bottle, and tote sizes.
