NSLC takes leadership position on plastic bags

HALIFAX, April 7, 2008 – The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) is announcing an initiative to reduce the waste caused by its retail operations through the eventual elimination of plastic bags. The NSLC’s intention is to stop using plastic shopping bags in all retail stores across the province in the fall of 2008 as part of a broader environmental strategy. The NSLC has introduced a new reusable bag and will expand the reusable bag options for our customers over the next few months.

“We are eager to eliminate the 290,000 pounds of plastic that lands in provincial landfills every year from the more than 10 million plastic bags used in NSLC retail stores,” said Bret Mitchell, NSLC President and CEO. “It’s just the right thing to do to make Nova Scotia an even better place to live.”

This leadership position taken by the NSLC is part of a larger environmental strategy the organization will begin rolling out today under the celebratory banner, Cheers to Change. A new reusable bag will be offered free to
customers who purchase three bottles of wine or more in April as part of a wine promotion while quantities last. The reusable bag will retail for $1.49 and will be available for sale starting May 1st. This bag has been custom built to suit NSLC customers with a seven compartment interior designed to efficiently carry bottles and cans. The NSLC will have additional reusable bag
options available for customers later this year.

“The NSLC’s new reusable bag is an innovative multipurpose container for our customers,” stated Rick Perkins, NSLC Vice President, Communications & Corporate Responsibility. “Until this new strategy is fully in place the NSLC encourages customers to put their plastic bags out with their recycling materials and not in their garbage.”

Until the plastic bags are eliminated, the NSLC will be introducing more environmentally friendly plastic shopping bags as part of this strategy. The new plastic bags are made using 40% recycled material, almost three times
as much as the previous plastic bag that consisted of 15% recycled material. New paper bags will also be introduced made of 100% recycled material using water based non-toxic ink. NSLC paper bags in-store are fully compostable and recyclable and plastic bags can be recycled in blue bags
with other recyclable material.

The NSLC is currently developing a more comprehensive corporate responsibility strategy and environmental plan designed to reduce the organizations environmental impact in the future. For more information on the NSLC’s environmental efforts, please visit cheerstochange.com.
